Dalrymple (Ailsa Bay) unpeated refill barrel
We bought this interesting cask, whose spirit is distilled in the same way as Balvenie. The cask is still at the distillery but will soon be on transport and we will taste it then. Bottling will be at the end of 2025-2027.
Ailsa Bay is the newest distillery of William Grant & Sons. It is situated next to the Girvan grain distillery, near the place where Ladyburn single malt was distilled until 1975. Production started in 2007, after construction was completed in just nine months. The still house contains four wash stills and four spirit stills. Total capacity is 5 million litres of pure alcohol per year. The water for the production comes from the same source as Cambus uses, namely Penwapple reservoir. The construction of Ailsa Bay was made necessary by the ever-increasing demand for Grant’s blended whisky. The spirit needed could not be sufficiently supplied by Grant’s other distilleries, Balvenie, Glenfiddich and Kininvie. Due to the large capacity of Ailsa Bay and the lack of space at the Balvenie distillery, the Kininvie distillery closed in 2010.
The barrel will be bottled if 70% of the participants agree. At various times during the process, sample bottles from the barrel will be sent to the Netherlands after which each participant will have the opportunity to taste and help decide. The cost of the sample is about 3 euros plus shipping.
